Coffee & Ink: Designing Your Shirt

levrets ink custom screen printing coffee and ink t shirts design

Good morning, friends! Let’s talk shirts.

I am a firm believer that everyone is an artist. Regardless of what your ability to draw or partake in arts and crafts time is, the fact is that we were all born to create. You just might be out of practice is all.

So when it comes to creating an awesome t-shirt design, whether you’re a Van Gogh at heart or have a phobia of stick figures, it can be a thrilling experience. Trust me, I design shirts everyday!

Traditionally, the best way to get started designing your shirt is with a pencil and paper (retro, we know). Start with your idea and try your hand at a few sketches. Pinterest and Google are great resources for inspiration, just remember not to plagiarize! Basic shapes and symmetry are your friends when it comes to shirt designs. Simplicity is king! (and cheaper!)

If you don’t fancy old school things like pencils and notebook paper, we have another solution for you. We have an Online Design Studio here on our website that is chalk full of designs and fonts for you to create your own shirt. You can even see your design on the color shirt you want to get a solid feel of what it will look like when printed. If the interface for the design studio seems overwhelming, please don’t worry! We have a tutorial for you that breaks everything down nice and simple for you. You can watch it here. Once you have your design finished, save it and we’ll have access to it right away to get your order started.

There’s a couple things to keep in mind when it comes to creating awesome artwork for your shirts. They are:

  • Color schemes; Look at a color wheel and see what colors will jive with your shirt color.

  • Keep it Simple; The less colors in your design the more affordable your shirts will be!

  • Symmetry and basic shapes (circles, triangles, etc.)

  • Large fonts (you want people to read your shirt without invading your bubble)

  • Have fun with it!!!

That last bullet point is obviously my favorite. We love our job and want you to be apart of the fun experience of t-shirt making. If you ever need help with your design or simply want someone else to do it for you, we can help! We do not charge any art fees, unlike other screen printing shops, so you can spend more time creating and less time budgeting!

Never forget, our doors are always open (well, Monday-Friday 8-5) to help out in any way we can. Feel free to shoot us an email, give us a call, or drop by the shop and we can talk shirts.

Have a productive week, friends!
