Cultivating Peace: How a Shirt Can Send a Message

When I was approached by my friend, Tim Palmer (speaker, songwriter, and fellow pizza enthusiast) on designing a new shirt for him, I already couldn't wait to get started. I know that when Tim has a vision, it's typically something I can get behind and support. Once he told me that he needed an awesome shirt for an event he had coming up out of state in less than two weeks, the pressure to design something really impactful was on.

Tim said that he wanted a design that represented the counter-culture Jesus teaches; specifically when it comes to war. He also knew he wanted a high-quality, soft shirt so we went with Bella+Canvas right from the start.

The words, "Cultivate Peace" kept being repeated as he explained his heart for this shirt during our initial discussion. The Bible verse Isaiah 2:4 was the foundation we wanted for the design. The concept of taking tools intended for war, death, and destruction and transforming them into things that can be used to bring forth peace, life, and restoration was something to get excited about (both creatively and spiritually).

I immediately got started sketching. I wanted to convey a modern take on Isaiah 2:4 so I took a modern tool for war (a machine gun) and decided to beat it into a shovel. A war tool used for deploying death and misery was to be transformed into a gardening tool used to bring life and sustenance. After some initial sketches, I took to Adobe Illustrator with my iPad Pro and Astropad. Here is the final result of what I came up with:

Tim loved it so we moved to production. We ended up printing a discharge white print on Bella+Canvas 100% Ringspun Cotton Asphalt and Rust shirts. They came out SO. GOOD.
